I think the 3 best methods to reduce crime rates in America are to put more criminals in prison, focusing on habitual criminals and to keep violent criminals in jail longer. By putting more criminals in prisons, we are reducing the number of negative influences and examples on the streets, so that younger criminals will have less negative influences on them, allowing them to focus more on the positive influences instead. Thus the younger generation will not conform to the crime-stricken lives of the older generation of criminals. By focusing on the habitual criminals, we are getting rid of those criminals who already had their “chance”, and will be putting more effort on the first-time criminals. This will discourage the first-time criminals, making them think twice about committing a crime, which will reduce the number of crimes. And finally by keeping the violent criminals in jail longer, there is no doubt that the community will be safer than if they were out and roaming about.
One of the simplest methods to reduce crime rates in America would be putting more police on the street. As control theory states, if the number of outer force, people who influence people not to deviate (in this case, policemen) increases, than more outer-force will be added to stop the might-be-prisoners from committing crimes.
Another effect way would be putting more criminals in prison. As differential association theory explains, much of people's behavior depends on the different groups they associate with. In short, if more criminals are on the street than more likely are "normal" citizens to turn into offenders. By putting more criminals in prison, they are separated from further inducing those around them to conform to their deviant behavior.
Lastly, giving alternative sentencing for non-violent offenders will reduce down social deviance in America. As strain theory suggests, as criminals who are not a physical threat to society are separated from violent criminals and are sentenced to projects that will pay back the community, the society will show to the criminals the institutionalized means of achieving cultural goals, such as material wealth. This chance to work, if it offers reasonable payment to the workers, will allow them to see that they do not necessarily need to commit crimes to earn money. Thus, criminals will gain chance to accept both the cultural goals and the institutionalized means of attaining that goal and turn away from deviating.
My three choices are:
3. Focus on Habitual Criminals.
4. Keep Violent Criminals in Prison Longer.
7. Develop Community Programs Which Deter Crime.
I think focusing on habitual criminals is a good way because this would lower the crime rate. I think it is important for the habitual criminals to "learn" what is right and what is wrong. If they keep on breaking the laws, they will receive more and more negative sanctions. And when they get out from the prisons, people will label them (labeling theory) as habitual criminals and they would be separated from the dominant group. But if they learn to solve problems without breaking the law, people wouldn't have discriminated them as much as to the habitual criminals.
I also think that the gov. should keep violent criminals in prisons longer. If a person kill/rape somebody and only has to stayed in the prison for a few years, they wouldn't learn the whole point of staying in a prison. And then they would break the law again because they didn't learn the right thing. So in order to have them resocialize in the society, they have to learn the norms of behaviours in this society.
The last one I chose is to develop community programs which deter crime. I think this is also a good way to actually solve the problem with crime rates. Because the criminals wouldn't have any chance to break the law if the community program is strong enough. Then they would change their "goal". Maybe they would go to find a job instead of stealing somebody's money. Many criminals break the law because they cannot reach their social goals (rebellion). So if they don't have a chance to have rebellion, then they would choose to do the "right"/"legal" thing (innovation-Strain theory). So I really think that this is a great idea.
1. Put More Police on the Street
I think this would be one of the best methods because if the criminals believe they won't get caught and therefore won't get punishment, there is no fear for them to commit crime. However, if there is a high chance of getting caught, many of them might not dare to commut the crime since they don't want to get punished (such as paying fine or getting into jails). This is close to the control theory, as the law can control people.
2. Keep Violent Criminals in Prison Longer
This would work because 3 years may seem like nothing, but 10 years, 20 years or even full life sentence would be the majority of life time and affect people. For example, going to jail for three years may only mean missing families and friends, but going for 20 years can mean wastingt the whole teenager or young life. This sounds a lot more threatening, so less people would dare to commit violent crimes. Less people would risk their 20 years of life for a single crime. I believe stricter negative sanction can control better.
3. Focus National and State Resources on Criminals, Not Weapons.
According to this site, 5/6 of the weapons are used illegally, which contributes to many crimes such as threatening or murdering. Only a small percentage of guns are used by police to keep social order. So having guns to control crimes actually has a serious latent dysfunction- causing more crimes. It would work better if the country outlaws guns and focuses natinoal resource to control crime to decrease possible crimes.
I would say the three best methods are to focus on habitual criminals, keep violent criminals in prisoners longer, and to find alternative sentencing forr non-violent offenders. By focusing on habitual offenders, it will be likely that the crime rate will decrease because criminals have a percent of recidivism, and with these criminals off the streets, the crime rate will decrease. By keeping violent criminals in prison, this ensures that they are kept off of the streets, and with the high rate of recidivism of criminals, unlikely to commit another violent crime. I believe that alternative methods of punishment like community service should be offered to nonviolent criminals because keeping people in jail is taxing on the economy. That way, the criminals could aid the community and do valuable work, which is helping due to the current financial state of affairs.
I think that the three best methods to reduce crime rates in America are:
1) Focus on habitual ciminals
2)keep violent criminals in prison longer
3)Develop Community Programs Which Deter Crime
Firstly focusing on habitual criminals gets people, who have no chance in redemption, in jail. Rather than let criminal offenders repeatedly walk in and out of prision, focus on the people who have an innate sense towards crime. In that way precious resources do not have to constantly be spent trying to lock up and free habitual criminals. (besides its not like they can change, unless they really try, but thats a different story)
Secondly keeping violent prisoners in prison longer serves to scare people from commiting violent crime. Many people do violent crimes because they dont think about jail time. If you make the time spent in prison higher then people are sent a message that violent crime is a "no-no".
3) Trust me, community watch programs do deter crime (i have a great story for this one but it is completely inappropriate for anyone related to school to know about). If a community wants to deter crime and works together to accomplish that goal, than it can be done. Change in a community only occurs when the individuals who live there decide to make it a better place. patrols and community awareness make all the difference. (where would you rather rob, a neighborhood with random patrols and communication between residents? or a neighborhood where noone cares about one another?)
I think that the best three methods to reduce crimes rates in America are:
1) Put more cops on the streets. Crime only happens when police and law enforcers are not present. If the amount of time where police are not present is lowered, then the amount of crime taking place will be lowered. In my home town in Pittsburgh, tons of cops are always roaming the streets. You can't go on a short car ride without seeing at least one cop. Because of this, the amount of people speeding has reduced drastically because people are constantly nervous that a cop will catch them and pull them over.
2) Focus on habitual criminals. It has been proven that people who have already committed a crime are most likely to commit crime again once they are let out. If more emphasis is put on stopping habitual criminals, it will be much safer. Putting more emphasis on people who have committed crimes many times will get people to stop committing crime, or at least decrease the amount of crime they commit.
3) Keep violent criminals in prison longer. Violent criminals most often get out way earlier than they deserve. Staying in prison longer will help in many ways. It will give them more of a reason not to do crime because they will not want to go to prison for so long and miss out on their life. Staying in prison longer will also give them less time to commit more crime when they get out, if they get out. It will show them that they will be punished severely for violent crimes, and they will then possibly think more about things before they do anything violent.
I believe the 3 ideal methods to reduce the crime rates in America are to keep criminals in prison longer rather than letting them out earlier. If they stay longer in prison, they would "learn their lesson" to not commit crimes. Furthermore it would help by putting more and more criminals in jail which may cost more money than usual, but it protects the city streets from mass chaos although crimes being committed go off the charts. Also we can influence younger criminals with positive sanctions after putting more criminals away teaching the young habitual criminals about the consequences that will result in if they commit crimes. This would help reduce the use of money to put criminals away and help end some of the chaos that happen in streets in America. Also paying more attention to habitual criminals would definitely benefit society at large. These are the best from my point of view.
1) Putting criminals in jail longer would definitely reduce the crime on the street. By putting them longer in jail would reduce the bad influence in the neighborhood. Thus, the kids in that certain neighborhood would not fellow the steps. In addition, according to the agent of socialization, peer group is a major influence of a person. So, if we put criminals in jail longer we could decrease the bad influence in peer. Thus, the younger people would not learn from negative influence.
2) Focusing on the habitual criminals is also a good idea. Habitual criminals might learn the bad habit from his or her family and peer group during their childhood. The reason that they commit a crime is before of their inner control. Thus, there is no way they are going to change if someone educates them. And we have to find a way to make the criminals on the street to think that going to jail is a shameful thing. Because most of the criminals view people going to jail as glory and normal. Thus, the people going to jail will be labeled “cool” according to the labeling theory. If we successfully did this then I believe that the crime on the street would decrease in a great amount.
3) Put more polices on street would also helps to lower the crimes in the society. According to the control theory, the police is the outer control of the society. If there are more police on the street then criminals would not dare breaking the laws. However, the money the government is going to invest in this method is a lot. This is the only bad thing about this method.
1)Develop community programs which deter crime
Adding community programs would effectively lower the crime rate and various areas. By getting the community involved more positive influences would be around. It was also help to make the social environment a little bit safer. Most criminals operate at night and by establishing a community curfew could scare some of the younger criminals and deviants away from crime.
2)Keep Violent Criminals in Jails longer
By keeping violent criminals in jail longer there would be less negative influences roaming the streets. Young deviants will have less bad influences on the streets to conform them to criminals standings. The social norms of criminals could ultimately change as well. To most criminals jail is not a big deal and is not taken seriously. By extending the sentence you maybe able to get criminals to ask themselves "Is it worth it?" Which could in the end reduce minor crimes such has stealing.
3)Focus on Habitual Criminals
This would pay huge dividends to reducing crime. Focusing on the "Big Timers" would not only reduce the threat and make communities safer. It would also take away a primary influence in that location. In other words if the tough top dog goes down many will go down with him, which would lower crime.
Crime in America
(1) Put more police on the street
The reason why I chose this is because the one thing that we all know that criminals are scared of are the police. If we have more police out in the street probably during the night time since there is more likely of crime during nightfall. With the more police around the crime would go lower then before since there would be a higher rate of criminal getting caught. With this assumption people who are planning to commit crime would likely to back up from their act and would accept and obey the rule or they would attempt to try to do their crime by another without getting caught by the police but either way police would react more faster if there are larger population of them at the streets and they would capture the criminal more faster.
(2) Keep Violent Criminals In Prison Longer
Keeping the criminal longer in the prison also means that there would be no trouble from that person in the society for a long time. They should especially focus on the criminals that have convicted multiple criminal cases which defines that he/she does not still understand about their wrong path. People who have committed a crime of killing someone should not only go for 2 or 3 years of prison but rather for maybe around 10 to 15 years in prison. It may sound harsh but in order to stop the population of crime get any higher the government and the United States itself has to make their authority stronger. By this way, all the criminals would think twice of committing a crime unless their willing to go to prison for 10 to 15 years.
(3) Develop Community Programs Which Deter Crime
Developing the curfew of people not being able to be hanging around or walking around the street during midnight fall is another great idea as well. Usually these are the time when crimes always occur to happen since criminals know it is even harder to catch criminal during night time then day time. Police checking for driver license and checking on every people during those times where they shouldn’t be around will likely drop the rate of crime due to the check up that the police are keep investigating. But at the same time it could be possible that during the day time the criminals would strike their action, so police should be extra careful if this rule is going to be published throughout the state. Just because the criminal’s rate gone done because of the curfew doesn’t mean that they have given up yet. It is likely that they would try to make their move one way or another.
I believe that the three best ideas to combat crime revolves around putting more criminals in prison, focusing on habitual criminals, and keeping violent criminals in prison longer.
In regards to putting more criminals in prison, less criminals will be on the streets. This in turn decreases the level of social interaction between criminals and regular citizens and will also inhibit the increase of negative deviance from transpiring. By putting more criminals in prison this can eliminate the chances of citizens from becoming a victim of differential association in which citizens will have less of an opportunity to associate and conform to the criminal's ideals upon social interaction.
Focusing on habitual criminals is also a major aspect in controlling crime. The habitual criminals have already been "labeled" as a criminal and will thus continue to carry out actions related to this social label. It will be harder for them to break out of their perceptions because they have repeatedly committed crimes and have thus failed to utilize the techniques of neutralization in order to prevent this from happening. As a result, habitual offenders no longer have a "casual" label of being a criminal. Instead, they are perceived as being far greater threats to society in terms of becoming catastrophically deviant.
Keeping violent criminals in prison longer can reduce the occurrence of crime, as explained through the strain theory. By serving longer prison sentences, prisoners develop a greater sense of "anomie" in relation to their blocked attempts from committing crimes. This in turn, promotes greater chances of conformity for the prisoners to abide to what is acceptable in terms of social norms and behaviors. By increasing the level of strain or "anomie" through longer prison sentencing, this will result in a greater likelihood that the prisoner will end up conforming to society's appropriate standards of culture.
4. Keep Violent Criminals in Prison Longer.
By keeping violent criminals in prison longer, those who are in the process of deciding whether to commit a crime will see prison time a much higher opportunity cost. They will realize that committing a crime will now cost more than it used to be, not in a monetary standard. They realize that if they were caught, they will lose more of their life time as well as the more time they are in prison the more relationships they lose with their families and friends. This will keep many criminals who is on the verge of committing a crime from committing it.
7. Develop Community Programs Which Deter Crime.
I believe this is the best way to lower the crime rate because this does not rely on force (in the case of more police), fear (in the case of longer time in prison or a great deal of extra cost. Instead, it relies on the society. Community program can be, as the website suggest, roadblocks. However, it can also be educational programs whereas it teaches young people or even older people about crimes. Education is a part of socialization. It teaches people how to be non-deviant. It teaches them how to be socialized into the society they live in. I believe this is effective because it goes into the unconscious mind of a person and it is build inside a person.
I cannot find a third good solution from the website. But I guess putting more police will help the crime rate since more law enforcers means more fear when committing a crime. This means that less people will commit the crime since they are easier to be caught. However it increases the cost to society and thus may not be as worthwhile as making programs or simply putting criminals in prison longer.
I think the best method would be 4. Keep violent criminals in prison longer. This makes criminals think more before they commit the crime, the opportunity cost become higher as the time become longer. People will think it “cost” more to do a crime so reduce the crime in America. Also keep violent criminals in prison longer can make society “cleaner” so people would have little chance to socialize with criminals. Therefore, there will be little chance for “clean” people to get influence from criminal.
Second method to reduce the crime in America would be put more police on the street, because criminals would know there are greater chances for them to get caught and get punishment. If there are no police near them, they would think it is “safe” to do any crime, because police would not see it. So put more police on the street can make criminals scared to do criminals
The third method would be develop community programs which deter crime, because I believe for some criminals, they don’t think what they are doing is wrong. They think they did all those crime was for their “good”, if the society have some educational programs teach them about crime, they will know what they did can cause society lots of problem. As the community socializes with them, they will learn what deviant act is, and stop doing things to become deviant.
in my opinion i think the 3 best methods in order to reduce crime rates in america is:
1) to keep violent criminals in jail longer
2) focusing on habitual criminals
3) putting more police out in the streets
KEEPING VIOLENT CRIMINALS IN JAIL LONGER:
By keep violent criminals in jail longer it gives the criminals a lesson to learn. If you just put a criminal in jail for 3 years because they killed someone, they would exit prison without changing. By putting violent criminals in jail for a longer time period it'd give them a chance to learn from their mistakes and also to keep them away from the streets.
FOCUSING ON HABITUAL CRIMINALS:
If we focus on habitual criminals, this would lower the crime rate dramatically. Habitual criminals have crime written all over them and they wouldn't stop. If we focus on habitual criminals this can reduce the crime rate and also discourage the first timer criminals to commit any crime.
PUTTING MORE POLICE OUT IN THE STREETS:
if we put more polices out in the streets it would maintain a balance. There wouldn't be as much crime because most are afraid of polices and the chance of being put into jail. If we have more police officers guarding the streets at night where most violent actions take place, it would create a much more sensible and safer environment.
The three best methods to reduce crime are putting more policemen on the streets, developing neighborhood crime watches, and keeping violent criminals locked up.
By putting more policemen on the streets the crime rate would decrease because it would supress any thoughts of negative deviance. People often become deviant to get what they want, but is only ever carried out when they don't think they'll get caught. Having more policemen on the streets would force people to think twice before they
Developing neighborhood crime watches would also make criminals think twice before they acted because they have more of a chance being caught. Neighborhood watches also change the environment that children grow up in. Instrad of being influenced by the crack dealer on their corner, they would be more active about keeping their neighborhood crime free and they would also learn that crime is not cool.
The point of jail is to redefine the being of the criminal. To strip him/her of all that he/she was. Jail is a degradation ceremony and criminals who are realesed too early have not been affected by the system and walk out a criminal. Staying in jail longer should make these changes more effective.
I think the easiest and most effective method to reduce crime in America is to put more police on the streets. I beleive this will work because as the Control Theory states, if you are influenced positively to not deviate, you will not deviate. The police men here act as the influence and creates a greater outforce on the person; which could stop potential crimals.
Another effective method is to simply put more criminals into prison. This could be a good plan because according to the differential association theory, people conform if they are more open to others (criminals). In other words, more and more "good" citizens might become bad if they are associated with the deviant citizens. And by putting more criminals in prison we are dividing the good and bad and reducing the opportunity for good citizens to conform.
The last method is to focus on habitual criminals. This will be effective because if you focus more on the habitual criminals, the crime rate is likely to decrease. This is because it has been proven that criminals are likely to become repeated offenders of the law. Once a criminal always a criminal.
although i think that all methods are necessary to drastically decrease the crime rate, the three most important ones are
1. focusing on habitual prisoners
by focusing on only habitual prisoners, the state is saving money and time. It is irrational to spend billions of dollars on law enforcement, if only a small percentage of the crime population are the ones doing the crime.if these habitual criminals are caught, they should be put in jail longer with less chance of a probabtion.
1. Prisoners should be kept in jail longer
Prisons should hold a more strict policy on containment duration. even though often times the situation is more complicated, such as mental illnesses or self-defense murders... with the longer duration of prison confinement, there is a loss of criminal rights because duration often depends on the degree of the crime. If all prisons kept a standard release date, crime rates would definitely decrease because all prisoners would be kept in jail longer. if the standard imprisonment time was murder=life, rape=30 years, burgurly= 20 years ext... crime rates would definitely decrease. These standards are a violation of criminal rights, however, the question asked the best ways to reduce crime rates.. this is the most straight forward way.
3. putting more police in the streets
"police and thieves in the streets. oh yeah"
if more police were put in the streets, such as.. an officer occupying ever couple of blocks or streets, the element of authority would cause criminals to be hesitant to do crime. the crime rate would dramatically drop if the means of getting away with a crime were lessened.
although this would probably cost more money, it will drop the crime rate.
2. Put More Criminals in Prison.
Putting more criminals in prison definitely helps to reduce crime in the streets. This not only reduces the crime rate that happens to innocent citizens, but also reduces chances of series of theories of deviances. If more criminals are placed in prison, this would reduce the differential association theory that may happen among criminals and civilians alike. More civilians would not learn the bad things that criminals teach them, and instead learn good things. Thus, during control theory, if any civilian would have to do another criminal thing, the inner and outer controls would be stronger, as there would be no criminals to teach them what is “right.”
4. Keep Violent Criminals in Prison Longer.
Putting criminals in jail longer definitely helps to reduce crime in the streets. Like in #2, this strategy can also help reduce the differential association theory and help the control theory. People in the streets would be a lot safer if criminals stay in jail because they don’t learn bad things from them. Kids would grow up in a great school without criminal influence. They learn good things and learn what’s wrong from right. By the time the criminals leave jail, the kids, having grown up, already know what to do should they ever be near a stranger or walk in an unsafe place. Control theory helps the kids not to follow a criminal, as inner controls help them decide which path to take, thanks to what they have learned from school and parents. Also, if criminals are placed in jail longer, they are basically resocialized and taken into a new life: life in prison, a total institution. Their status is changed from criminal to prisoner, and a prisoner must learn how to behave in a prison cell according to the rules. Over time, the prisoners will realize that more violent crime will get them into jail longer, and thus, by the time they exit prison, they will change.
7. Develop Community Programs Which Deter Crime.
This one serves as an outer control for most criminals and would-be criminals. I agree with the fact that drug dealing drops when police check for driver’s licenses, because the police serve as the outer controls. Criminals wouldn’t want to do any deviant act near the police, or be watched, so that’s why they simply stop. These programs benefit both good adults and kids alike; adults can make a difference if they participate in the neighborhood crime watch program, as they can report if a criminal does something wrong. Then they can teach kids what is right from wrong. That’s why it’s a very good idea to begin community programs; it especially works in almost every neighborhood. Anyone can make a difference.
The 3 best ideas on the website to combat the rise of crime in America, in my opinion, is to develop community programs that deter criminal activities, focus on habitual criminals, and putting more policemen on the streets to fight crime.
Communities are just as important in stemming the rise of crime as are the conventional institutions that fight crime. Without the support of communities in which the crime occurs, the police force have a very hard time in solving crimes and arresting the perpetrators of the crimes. Therefore, because communities can be extremely helpful in fighting crimes, the police and the citizens of America should make an effort to bring the communities on the side of the police. This is possible by developing anti-crime programs such organizations that educate people about crime. Neighborhood watches are also effective too.
The recidivism rate in th U.S, around 63%, is alarmingly high. This means that people who commit crimes are most likely to commit crimes again. The rationale for this statistic is that criminals actually become more criminal-like while incarcerated because they are surrounded by peers that have done the same crimes (or worse). This This plays into the differential association theory which states that people are more likely to act deviant when they have peers that act deviant. In essence, focusing on habitual criminals allows the law-enforcers, more than not, to expect crime and stop it.
Putting more policemen on the streets, to my understanding, would definetly lower crime. Though the cost of providing for the policemen may be high, crime rates will most likely dip considerbaly lower. In numbers there is strength and in strength there is a high chance that more arrests will be made and when more arrests are made, less people will commit less crimes thus making the crime rate lower.
1. Put more police on the streets. I think this would help lower the crime rates in America because crime mostly happens in places where there are no cops. By placing more cops on the streets people will begin to get scared and stop being deviant. As stated by the Control Theory the law can control peoples actions. Over all, if there are more police officers on the streets less deviant acts will be made.
2. Put more criminals in jail. I was debating between this one and keeping prisoners in jail for longer, but i chose this one because the people who are deviant but aren't sent to jail will just become more and more deviant committing worse and worse crimes. By putting more prisoners in prison it is a higher chance they won't commit a crime again because they know they won't want to go back to prison.
3. Develop Community Programs Which Deter Crime. This is probably the best idea because developing a sense of family will not betray one another and do whatever it takes to keep a community safe. Being a community will help people feel a sense of love and therefor causing them to not become deviant. By creating a community you are teaching people to be socialized allowing them to see what is right and what is wrong so this is greatly help the crime rate go down.
Alternative sentencing
Focus on Habitual Criminals
Develope Community which Deter Crimes
Alternative sentencing is a viable option. As noted in the article, the American legal system just isn't working. It appears that the formal outer controls are simply unaffective against deviance. Using alternative sentencing could explore new methods of control that are more effective.
Focusing on habitual controls may also lower crime. According to the labeling theory, criminals will act like criminals because they are labeled criminals. Therefore, focusing on previous criminals will help stop deviance because they are the one's most likely to commit crimes.
Developing criminal deterent programs on the local level will also be effective. As Joe pointed out above, community watch programs deter crimes. Also, turning a community completely against crime will stop criminal activities before they begin. According to the differential association theory, people act how the people they respect. If the community is against crime, odds are the would-be criminals will also suppress their deviant desires resulting in lower crime.
As a note, I would like to add that none of these methods are a simple quick-fix for crime. There is also no way to completely destroy crime(strain theory).
Good thoughtful responses everyone ! enjoyed reading your rationalizations for methods of crime management.
As you probably noticed, the next chapter on Freakonomics is on crime control: policies that work, don't work and why.
We may read it in class..maybe not...
1. Put More Police on the Street.
2. Put More Criminals in Prison.
4. Keep Violent Criminals in Prison Longer.
1. I believe that putting more police on the streets will be the best way to decrease criminal activities. The police are the outer force of the community. They control and deter people that are deviating. For instance it's harder to sell drugs because there are more cops watching.
2. I think that putting more criminals in prison will decrease crime. With less criminals on the street the ratio between criminals and cops will be more equal thus having a stronger outer force.
4. Keeping violent criminals in jail for longer would prevent them from committing anymore violent crimes. Also the longer they spend in jail they more likely that they would change? Possibly.
